How to automate corporate gifting in six steps
A reliable workflow looks like this:
business event -> eligibility check -> recipient details -> gift selection -> order -> tracking
1. Define the trigger and budget
Start with a specific business event and a clear spending rule. Examples:
- A Salesforce opportunity moves to
Closed Wonand its value exceeds $50,000. - An employee reaches a one-year or five-year anniversary.
- A customer completes a product research interview.
- A loyalty member reaches a points threshold.
Store the event ID, recipient ID, approved amount, and campaign name before creating a gift. These fields make duplicate prevention and reporting easier later.
2. Collect recipient details
There are two common approaches:
- Known address: Use an address already stored in an approved HR or customer system.
- Claim link: Send the recipient a secure link where they choose a gift and enter their address.
Only collect the fields needed for delivery. Limit who can read the address, define a retention period, and never place API keys in client-side code.
3. Choose the gift
For a fixed campaign, save one or more approved product URLs and a backup item. For recipient choice, present a small catalog filtered by budget, shipping destination, and availability.
Do not save a product's displayed price as the final cost. Retail prices, shipping, taxes, and availability can change. Enforce the approved budget again when the order is created.
4. Create the physical gift order
Zinc's Create Order endpoint accepts product URLs, a shipping address, a maximum price in cents, and optional order data. Orders are processed asynchronously.

idempotency_keyprevents a retry from creating a second order. Zinc accepts keys up to 36 characters, so a UUID fits. Use the same key for every attempt of the same gift. Store the returned order ID with your campaign and recipient records. Do not treat the initial response as proof that the retailer has accepted the order.
5. Process order and delivery events
Configure a webhook URL in the Zinc dashboard and verify the X-Webhook-Signature header before processing any event. The documented order webhooks include:

Tracking numbers are added to the order automatically after the retailer ships. Each record can include the carrier, tracking number, delivery estimate, current status, and checkpoint history. Use these events to update the CRM, notify the sender, and contact the recipient at useful moments. Webhooks may be delivered more than once, so deduplicate them by order and event.
6. Handle failures, cancellations, and returns
Automated gifting still needs an exception path.
- Retry timeouts and service errors with the same idempotency key.
- Do not retry validation, authentication, or insufficient-funds errors without fixing the cause.
- Set a backup product when a campaign depends on a specific delivery date.
- Notify an operator when an order fails or a retailer cancels it.
- Define who handles damaged, late, or unwanted gifts.
- Use the returns API when an eligible physical order needs to be returned.
The goal is not to remove people from every edge case. It is to remove repetitive checkout work while giving people clear exceptions to resolve.

Recipient experience. Check whether the recipient needs an account, whether they can enter an address without the sender seeing it, and what happens if they decline the gift or need a return. Read the notification emails before you go live.

- Retrying without an idempotency key. A timeout does not mean the order failed. Save the key before the first request and reuse it on every retry.
- Trusting the product page price. Tax, shipping, and availability change. Set a hard

- Stopping at order creation. Plan for tracking, failed delivery, cancellations, support, and returns before launch.
