Amazon Blocked Meta's Muse: What It Means for AI Agents

Amazon blocked Meta's Muse agent from its store in September 2026. What happened, Amazon's objections, the Perplexity precedent, and how agents can still buy.

Short answer: On 20 September 2026 Amazon started blocking Muse, Meta's personal AI agent, from shopping on Amazon.com. Amazon says Meta never got permission, that Muse doesn't identify itself while browsing, and that it handles customers' login credentials. Meta says Muse can't see passwords or payment details. The fight is the clearest test yet of whether a retailer can turn away an agent its own customer sent. For builders, the lesson is to buy through a channel that doesn't depend on logging in as the shopper, such as a purchasing API like Zinc or a protocol the merchant opted into.

What happened

  • 8 September 2026: Meta launches Muse in the US, a personal AI agent that can browse websites, fill out forms, book travel and make purchases.
  • Before the block: Amazon asks Meta to remove Amazon from Muse's shopping experience. Meta declines.
  • 20 September 2026: Amazon starts blocking Muse. Shoppers who try to buy through it see a popup saying that access by an unauthorized AI agent "violates Amazon's Conditions of Use."
  • 22 September 2026: the block is widely reported, first by GeekWire, then by the Wall Street Journal, TechRepublic and others.

Days later, Amazon opened its seller tools to Anthropic's Claude through a Selling Partner plugin. That plugin is for sellers managing their own catalog, not for shopping agents.

Amazon's objections

Amazon's case, as reported, comes down to three points:

  1. No permission. Amazon says it wasn't told in advance that Muse would access its store and didn't authorize it.
  2. No identification. Amazon says Muse doesn't identify itself as an agent while browsing.
  3. Credentials. Amazon says Muse appears to capture and store customers' Amazon login details.

An Amazon spokesperson said third-party apps that buy on a customer's behalf should operate openly and respect a store's decision about whether to take part.

Meta's response

Meta disputes the credential point. It says Muse can't see customers' passwords or payment information, and that credentials are kept in secure storage.

The Perplexity precedent

This isn't Amazon's first agent fight. In November 2025 Amazon sued Perplexity over its Comet browser agent, which could shop on Amazon for a signed-in user. Amazon won a preliminary injunction in March 2026, and the Ninth Circuit vacated it on 4 August 2026.

That ruling left the main question open: can a retailer block an agent that its own customer chose to send? Muse is the next round of the same argument, with a much larger company on the other side.

Why Amazon keeps saying no

Amazon has its own agents to protect. Its shopping assistant Rufus was renamed Alexa for Shopping in May 2026, and its Buy for Me feature buys from other brands' sites for Amazon customers. An outside agent that shops Amazon for you takes the ads, the recommendations and the customer relationship out of Amazon's hands.

Amazon is also not part of the open agent checkout protocols. It joined the governance council of Google's Universal Commerce Protocol in April 2026, but offers no checkout through UCP or OpenAI's Agentic Commerce Protocol. So there's no sanctioned door for a general-purpose agent to walk through.

How AI agents can buy from Amazon without this fight

Muse and Comet share one design: the agent drives the shopper's own Amazon account, in a browser, using the shopper's login. That's exactly what Amazon objects to. If you're building an agent that needs to buy physical products, there are three other designs:

ApproachHow it buysAmazon?
Merchant protocol (ACP, UCP)Calls checkout endpoints the merchant publishedNo. Amazon isn't on ACP or UCP checkout
Retailer's own agent (Alexa for Shopping, Buy for Me)Runs inside the retailer's appYes, but only Amazon's agent
Purchasing API (such as Zinc)The agent sends a product, an address and a price cap; Zinc places the order and returns trackingYes

With a purchasing API, the shopper never hands their Amazon password to an AI. Zinc places the order and ships it to the shopper's address, and the agent gets an order id and tracking back. Zinc has placed orders through its API since 2014, more than 21 million of them.

For a person rather than a developer, the same thing is available as a connector in Claude and ChatGPT: search Amazon, Walmart and Target from a chat, pay by card, and only your click places the order. FAQ

Why did Amazon block Meta's Muse?

Amazon says Meta didn't get permission for Muse to access its store, that Muse doesn't identify itself as an agent while browsing, and that it appears to capture customers' login credentials. Meta disputes the credential claim.

When did Amazon block Muse?

Amazon started blocking Muse on Sunday, 20 September 2026, twelve days after Meta launched it in the US on 8 September.

Can Muse still shop on Amazon?

As of the reports in late September 2026, no. Shoppers who try to use Muse on Amazon see a popup saying unauthorized AI agent access violates Amazon's Conditions of Use.

Is this like the Perplexity Comet case?

Yes. Amazon sued Perplexity over Comet in November 2025 and won a preliminary injunction in March 2026, which the Ninth Circuit vacated in August 2026. Both cases turn on whether a store can refuse an agent a customer chose.

Can any AI agent buy from Amazon?

Yes, through a purchasing API that places the order itself instead of logging in as the shopper. Zinc does this for Amazon, Walmart, Target and Best Buy, through an API, a Claude and ChatGPT connector, and an agent skill.
