ChatGPT Shopping: How to Buy From Amazon in ChatGPT (2026)
ChatGPT can research products, but Amazon isn't in Instant Checkout. Here's how to buy from Amazon, Walmart and Target inside ChatGPT, paying by card.
Short answer: ChatGPT's built-in shopping can research products and buy from merchants that opted into Instant Checkout, but Amazon, Walmart and Target aren't among them. To buy from those stores inside ChatGPT, add the Zinc connector (https://mcp.zinc.com/mcp). Ask for a product, pick a result, and press Pay & place: Zinc places the order, you pay by card, and tracking comes back into the chat. No Zinc account is needed.
ChatGPT shopping has changed three times in a year. This guide sorts out what ChatGPT can buy on its own today, why Amazon isn't part of it, and how to close that gap with a connector.

What ChatGPT shopping can do on its own
Out of the box, ChatGPT has two shopping features:
- Product research. Ask for "the best robot vacuum for pet hair under $300" and ChatGPT returns products with images, prices and links. Since November 2025, shopping research goes further and builds a personalized buyer's guide by asking you questions first.
- Instant Checkout. Launched on 29 September 2025 with the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), built with Stripe. Merchants that implement ACP can sell inside ChatGPT. In March 2026 OpenAI scaled it back toward merchant-owned checkout, saying the first version "did not offer the level of flexibility we aspire to provide."
So ChatGPT can tell you what to buy at Amazon, and can link you there, but you finish the purchase on Amazon's site yourself.
Why you can't check out at Amazon in ChatGPT
Instant Checkout only works where the merchant opted in by implementing ACP. Amazon hasn't. It runs its own assistants (Rufus, renamed Alexa for Shopping in May 2026, and Buy for Me) and has been blocking third-party shopping agents: it sued Perplexity over its Comet agent in November 2025, and in September 2026 it blocked Meta's Muse agent from its site.
Walmart and Target took a different route and helped build Google's Universal Commerce Protocol for Google's own shopping surfaces. That doesn't make them buyable inside ChatGPT either.
The result: the stores most Americans shop at aren't in ChatGPT's checkout. The deeper version of this, with every protocol compared, is in Can AI buy things online?
Add Amazon, Walmart and Target with a ChatGPT app
ChatGPT can use outside tools through connectors (apps built on the Model Context Protocol). The Zinc connector adds a store-agnostic checkout: search across Amazon, Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Etsy and Shopify stores, a card payment per order, and order tracking.
To add it:
- In ChatGPT, find Zinc in the app directory and add it.
- If it isn't listed for you yet, go to Settings → Connectors → Advanced, turn on Developer mode, and add a connector with this URL:
https://mcp.zinc.com/mcp
Custom connectors need a paid ChatGPT plan. No sign-in is asked for, and you don't need a Zinc account or API key. Setup notes for every client are in the connector docs.
A purchase, step by step
Find me a USB-C hub with at least three ports, under $40.
- Search. A results card lists up to 20 products across retailers, best first, with price, retailer and rating. Searching is free. Already have a product link? Paste it and skip the search.
- Review. Pick one. ChatGPT prepares the order and shows the item, the estimated total (price, estimated tax, shipping and a $1.00 Zinc fee) and the hold on your card. Nothing is charged yet.
- Pay & place. A Stripe page opens for your card, shipping address and phone number. The address goes on the payment page, never into the chat. Only the actual total plus the $1.00 fee is captured.
- Track. The card turns into an order id. You get confirmation and shipping emails, and you can ask "where's my order?" any time.
If you name a budget ("don't spend more than $50"), it becomes a hard cap including tax and shipping. The order fails rather than going over it.
Instant Checkout vs a connector
| ChatGPT Instant Checkout | Zinc connector in ChatGPT | |
|---|---|---|
| Where you can buy | Merchants that implemented ACP | Amazon, Walmart, Target, Best Buy and other retailers, no merchant opt-in |
| Amazon | No | Yes |
| Setup | Built in | Add once from the app directory or by URL |
| Payment | Card through ChatGPT | Card on a Stripe page, per order |
| Fee to you | None | $1.00 per order |
| Tracking in the chat | Varies by merchant | Yes, with carrier checkpoints |
They work side by side. Use Instant Checkout where it's available, and the connector for the big-box retailers it doesn't cover.
Is it safe to let ChatGPT buy things?
The connector is designed so ChatGPT can't spend on its own. Placing an order takes a confirmation token that the connector gives to the card on your screen, not to the model. ChatGPT can search and prepare an order, but only your click on Pay & place places it. A prompt injection on a web page ChatGPT read can't turn into a purchase.
Each confirmation is also tied to the exact items and price, expires after 10 minutes, and can't be submitted twice. Restricted goods (weapons, tobacco, regulated drugs, adult products, counterfeits) are refused.
FAQ
Can ChatGPT buy things on Amazon?
Not with its built-in checkout, because Amazon isn't part of Instant Checkout. With the Zinc connector added, ChatGPT can search Amazon, prepare the order, and place it after you press Pay & place.
Is ChatGPT Instant Checkout still available?
Yes, for merchants that support it. OpenAI scaled it back in March 2026 toward merchant-owned checkout, and the big retailers like Amazon, Walmart and Target aren't in it.
Does ChatGPT shopping work with Walmart?
ChatGPT can research Walmart products and link to them. To check out at Walmart without leaving ChatGPT, use a connector like Zinc.
Do I need a ChatGPT Plus plan?
Adding a custom connector by URL needs a paid ChatGPT plan. Searching and buying through the connector itself has no subscription; you pay per order.
What does it cost?
Searching is free. Each order is the item total with shipping and tax, plus a $1.00 Zinc fee.
Does this also work in Claude?
Yes. See how to buy from Amazon with Claude.
